SCANNING YOUR OLD PHOTOS: You need to make a digital copy of a photo to add it to the website. The easiest way to make digital copies of your old photos and tintypes is to scan them. Tintypes scan amazingly well! A flat-bed scanner with the ability to scan at 300 dpi or better is ideal. Copy service centers (places such as Kinko's, for example) will handle scanning, but it's not cheap. Another option, if you don't have a scanner, is to ask a friend to scan them for you onto a CD. Try scanning family photos in color which is preferable, even if the original photo is black and white. If you get a bad color cast (ie., the scan looks badly tinted or streaked with odd colors), then scan it in black and white. (One of the main reasons that a color scan is preferable is it allows more options for digitally restoring the image in programs such as Adobe Photoshop). And scan them at a high resolution. If the photo is about the size of a playing card, scan it at 600 dpi. If the photo is larger, scan it at 300 dpi. Email your scan as an attachment to sllydick@yahoo.com along with a description, including whenever possible: names of people in the photo, date and where taken, any notes or other information you have about the photo. |
