COUNTY TAX LISTS

A Compilation of Tax Records

for

Lydicks & their kin

"In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes."

-- Benjamin Franklin in a letter to

Jean-Baptiste Leroy, 1789

"If the Lord loveth a cheerful giver,

how he must hate the taxpayer!"

-- John Andrew Holmes

The data included here has been extracted from a number of county property tax registers.  Any number of Lydicks and their kin can be found in these charts.  The majority of the records apply to the direct family of Jost Leydig.  However, there are other families represented as well.  You will see the names of men whose children or grandchildren married Jost's offspring.  And some of the material submitted refers to Leidig-Leydig-Lydicks who are not presently known to be related to Jost Leydig.

Do you have a tax record to submit for inclusion on this page?

Email sllydick@yahoo.com with information.

This is a long page.  If you don't want to scroll all the way down you have the option of selecting a county from the following list.  Just click on the township to jump to those particular records.

note 1:  I believe there were 2 German immigrants named Jost Leydig (Leidig), and I'm not sure which one this is.  The Jost Leydig who later settled in Somerset County owned a gristmill and sawmill, and also possibly did some blacksmith work (particularly wagon making).  This Jost's occupation, shoemaker, casts doubt on whether he is, in fact, the same man.

note 2:  His name was included in the main list (as opposed to list of "single free men"), suggesting married property owner.

note 3:  Tax was in "shillings".

note 4:  From page 40, 3rd Series, Vol. 18 of Pennsylvania Archives.

BEDFORD COUNTY, PA

1776   Brothers Valley Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania  (Return of Assessments)

There were no Leydigs (or variant spellings), no Griesings (or variant spellings) and no Fairs (or variant spellings) included in this list.  There was a listing for a John Gillinger (possibly he was the owner of the "Gillinger" tract of land bought by Joseph & Jacob Leydig in 1802 in what was then part of Somerset Co).

(Information taken from Bedford County Assessment Books 1776-1788 ..... FHL US/CAN film 1449112).

1775   Cumberland Valley Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania  (Tax List)

In 1775 Cumberland Valley Twp. included that area which would later (1785) become Londonderry Twp.

There were no Leydigs (or any other variant spelling) included on the tax list for this year.  This suggests that Jost settled in Bedford County sometime after 1775, but before 1785 when we find him on the Londonderry Twp. tax list.

1779   Cumberland Valley Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania   (Tax List)

No Lidicks (or any variant spelling) were included in the tax list.  Nothing shown for the name Liddy either.

(information taken from Bedford County Assessment Books 1776-1788.... FHL US/CAN film 1449112)

Name

Land owned Horses Cows Sheep Tax

Joseph Liddy

100 acres

two

five

six

2 pounds, 16 shillings, 5 pence (state tax)

4 shillings, 11 pence (county tax)

note 1:  It is a possibility that this is Jost Leydig.  Joseph Liddy shows up in this tax list but not in the 1785 tax list for Cumberland Valley or Londonderry Townships (Londonderry was formed out of Cumberland in 1785).  While there is no Joseph Liddy in subsequent tax lists, we do, however, begin to see Jost Leydig's name beginning in 1785.

No Leydigs (or any variant spelling) could be found on this tax list.  Their names are probably included on the tax rolls for Southampton Twp., Somerset County (which was formed in 1801 from Bedford County).
